News | 2013 – A year in LS headlines
LS looks back at our front pages throughout the year, from January onwards. We started the year with two stories of controversial student activity online; investigations into “Sugar Daddy” dating websites and online essay providers:
“A regular user of ‘Sugar Daddy’ dating website has spoken exclusively to Leeds Student about her experience.”
“This week a BBC documentary has exposed Leeds as the party drug capital of the UK.” Our first February edition led with this and a story about Edge Gym members expressing their anger over lengthy cues and insufficient space.
“A Leeds Student investigation has shown that gambling is a serious problem amongst students in Leeds.”
“A member of the Union’s Hiking Club has tragically died during a hill walk in Scotland.”
“The University had made a landmark decision to extend library opening times to 24-hours a day during the summer exam period.”
“Police have carried out a drugs bust at Lupton hall of residence.”
“The Refectory has wasted nearly £50 worth of food every day, this newspaper can reveal,” while the inside pages featured the breaking story of rugby star Danny Cipriani being hit by a bus near the Parkinson steps.
“Police say an organized gang may be responsible for a spate of thefts in the Union.”
“Five Leeds University students have been forced to move out of their accommodation after discovering their landlord was a registered sex offender…”
“Popular Leeds student club night Tequila has been blasted for releasing a promotional video condoning rape and sexual violence,” read the top line kicking off our on-going coverage of the backlash against the Tequila night.
“Leeds University Rugby coach Hugh Gumbs assaulted a student in Warehouse last Wednesday, LS can reveal.”
“Police are investigating following a student’s claim that they were assaulted in Fruity…”
“Lectures and seminars across the University were cancelled yesterday as lecturers and staff took to the streets over cuts to pay and working conditions.”
“A third year student has told LS of the terrifying moment he was mugged at knife-point by a man in a balaclava.”
“A heroic branch manager has saved the day by tackling a man who attacked a female student in broad daylight opposite the Parkinson steps.”
“Five cars have been set ablaze in Hyde Park in one night during a multiple arson attack.”
“The Sun newspaper has been banned from sale in the Union, following a student vote.”
