TV | Freeview Flicks of the Week – The Godfather, The Inbetweeners Movie and Winter’s Bone

Our weekly LSi best freeview flicks picks are here!

MONDAY – Betty Blue (Film4 22:45)

France is regarded as being the nation of romance, with Paris known as The City of Love. Following the lives of Zorg and Betty as they take on the journey of love, this 1986 film is a romantic drama like no other. Tragic, beautiful and poignant, with a powerful and shocking ending that will stay with you.

TUESDAY – Super (Film4 23:05)

This week sees the release of Marvel’s latest big superhero blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy (which, on a side-note, looks AWESOME), directed by James Gunn. Before Gunn became Marvel’s latest protégé, he was directing quirky indie films such as Super. The fantastic Kick-Ass may also have taken a look at what would happen if an everyday man attempted to be a superhero, but Super takes a much more realistic and blackly comical approach which will leave you laughing.

WEDNESDAY – The Lincoln Lawyer (Film4 21:00)

At the moment, Matthew McConaughey is Hollywood’s sweetheart, stealing the show with his performances in Dallas Buyers Club and True Detective. This one time rom-com star has undertaken what is called ‘The McConaissance’, moving away from the tacky and toward classy Oscar winning dramas. A key film in this transformation was The Lincoln Lawyer, where McConaughey stars as a lawyer who has a crisis of conscience with a certain client. Thrilling with fantastic performances it’s a great watch!

THURSDAY – The Godfather (Film4 21:00)

Need any more be said? Some of us here at LSi have yet to see this epic classic, so join us on Thursday to lose your Godfather virginity. Get comfy though, this film is a long one.

FRIDAY – Run Fatboy Run (ITV2 21:00)

After Friends, David Schwimmer chose to step back from the limelight to pursue a career as a director. Having already directed some episodes of the popular sitcom, he was not without experience, but his first full-length theatrical release Run Fatboy Run was certainly a challenge. However, he pulls it off with some style. Simon Pegg plays a man who left a woman at the altar, and so runs a marathon to prove to her that he is better than the man she is now engaged to marry. Cue hilarious training scenes, a funny best mate played by Dylan Moran, and a feel-good tone sure to put a smile on your face.

SATURDAY – The Inbetweeners Movie (Channel 4 21:00)

For us young people, The Inbetweeners Movie is pretty much an essential watch for the summer holiday season, especially with the second film being released next week.  The quartet of socially awkward 18-year olds we have grown to love take a trip to Malia for a lads trip, this is a fun-guaranteed watch. Perfect for a Saturday night on the sofa with pizza, beer and mates.

SUNDAY – Winter’s Bone (BBC2 4 22:30)

Jennifer Lawrence is best known for playing rebel Katniss Everdeen in the popular Hunger Games series, but before she hit mega stardom she starred in Winter’s Bone, a melancholic, indie drama. Playing a young girl who goes out hunting for her drug-dealing father whilst trying to provide for her family by hunting in the woods, it is no wonder that Lionsgate saw a Katniss inside her. Lawrence gives a stunning performance and steals the show and audience’s hearts in this thrilling drama with a raw emotional edge.
