Straight off of the release of his full-length album Wallflower in September, soulful New Zealand native Jordan Rakei will be bringing his silky-smooth tunes to Belgrave Music Hall in Leeds on the 18th of October.
The 25-year-old multi-instrumentalist first garnered attention with his debut EP Franklin’s Room in 2013, which he recorded from his Brisbane bedroom. Since then, Rakei has moved to London, released another EP, Groove Curse, and released his debut LP Cloak. He’s even been featured on ‘Masterpiece’, a song on the Disclosure album Caracal.
Blending together elements of r&b, soul, jazz and electronic music, Rakei always delivers jazzy, emotionally-charged tunes. On Wallflower, he addresses his anxieties and insecurities head on, bringing to the table an emotional vulnerability new to his music. How he brings those insular, introspective feelings onto the stage is yet to be seen, but judging from early reviews of his other shows it’ll be an intimate, emotionally-charged night.
With his more popular, older songs like ‘Midnight Mischief’ and ‘Alright’ under his belt, it’s likely that Rakei’s Leeds show will be a memorable one, full of the groovy bass licks and jazzy drum fills he’s become known for.
