Leeds Student Radio have been successful for a second year running in winning the ‘Best
Student Radio Station’ award at the Student Radio Awards 2024.

The Student Radio awards take place annually at Indigo at the O2 in London and is the most
prestigious night in student radio where industry experts from across the field come
together to celebrate the very best in student radio.

Presenting the awards were Capital Breakfasts weekend presenter Niall Gray and Radio 1
Xtra’s weekend breakfast presenter Swarzy, with awards being handed out by industry
heavyweights such as Head of Radio 1, Aled Jones and Greg Hughes, Global’s Director of
Strategy, Innovation and Talent Development, who presented LSR with their sought-after
award.

Not only was the evening a chance to celebrate the hard work of student radio
stations across the country, but also a chance for students with a passion for radio and
journalism to network with some of the very best in the industry.

The night featured nineteen awards across the evening, with over fifty Bronze, Silver and
Gold awards being handed to worthy students as well as live performances from JC Stewart,
Jerub and Rose Gray.

The moment of the night came at the end as the prestigious ‘Best Student Radio Station’
award was up for grabs. Having been successful the previous year, LSR were going for the
double and were successful in doing so.

After the award was read out and celebratory hugs were exchanged, the LSR team went on stage to receive the award with speeches from both the current Station Manager Keira Ford and last year’s Station Manager Hollie Ross.

Speaking to The Gryphon, Hollie said that she was “super, super happy” and that to “get
it two years on the bounce is unheard of.” She went onto say that the award was dedicated
to “the alumni and station managers that came before” and that it hadn’t quite sunk in yet
what they had managed to achieve.

Keira echoed much of Hollie’s words saying, “Winning best Student Radio Station two years
in a row is truly incredible, although it leaves me with huge shoes to fill, I am equally filled
with pure joy and pride for everyone who contributed to this award.”

She added that she was going into semester two “with so much confidence of the talent at LSR” and “bring on 2025 for the hat-trick!”

Not only were LSR successful in picking up the top gong at the awards, but they also picked
up several others throughout the evening.

The station won the bronze award for ‘Best Station Branding’, ‘Low Notes with AKA Low’ on LSR picked up the bronze award for ‘Best Specialist Music Programming’ and also another gold award in the form of the ‘Best Event Programming’ which the station won in conjunction with University Radio York for their ‘LSR X URY Presenter Hunt’ last semester.

LSR broadcasts daily from 9am until late and can be listened to on the LSR player online, as
well as across Spotify and Soundcloud.
