Leeds Train Station Begins Opening Phases After Months of Delays

The delayed scheme began unveiling the first stages of the new entrance.
Leeds train station has now opened the Bishopsgate Street pavement.
The £46.1m Leeds Station Gateway scheme includes new pedestrian-friendly walkways, a cycle-hub and lifts.
A council spokesperson said:
“This week we have opened the pavement along Bishopgate Street and behind the new taxi shelter. This will allow pedestrians to continue walking north on the western side of the road. We continue working towards opening elements of the scheme this month.”
This development allows a public realm area between Bishopgate Street and New Station Street, however further works are still to be expected later on this month.
The lifts between Bishopgate Street and New Station Street will provide essential step-free access to the newly pedestrianised area. Leeds City Council confirmed that construction partner, Balfour Beatty, will be installing and testing them to open mid-October.
However, the Gateway scheme was initially due to be finished in autumn 2025, with it later being pushed back to September 2026 and finally to October. Leader of Leeds City Council, James Lewis, said: “I know it’s taken time, however, Leeds City Station is built on a massive and historic set of Victorian brick arches which need maintaining and the two schemes have gone ahead together.”
