The Kirklees Council in Huddersfield announced its intention to put up for sale a row of units that had been burned down in a suspected arson attack.
In June 2026, a building situated on St. John’s Road in Birkby, Huddersfield went up in flames in what the police suspected to be a deliberate fire. As reported by the BBC, two independent businesses were forced to stop trading after losing their premises and have decided to close rather than relocate. A woman near the site at the time of the fire was arrested by local police, but was released without charges.
The council had been planning to demolish the site, but has now decided to include it in an ongoing effort to sell property. As reported by the BBC, Kirklees Council is in a £13.6m overspend this financial year. The authority hopes to bring in £4m through the quick sale of assets such as the St. John’s Road site.
