Council calls for public’s opinion on Leeds Eastern spaces

Leeds City Council is asking the public to share their views on issues around transport and public space on the Eastern side of Leeds city centre.
A series of consultations will be taking place, the first public one being held in Leeds City Bus Station on the 21st November. These drop-in events will be used to share views on issues and opportunities for the areas.
The areas in focus are; St. Peter’s Street, Eastgate, Duke Street, Kirkgate, York Street, Crown Point Road, Marsh Lane and East Street. This inhabits Leeds City Bus station and contains important travel links connecting East Leeds to the centre.
The scheme will attempt to make streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users along with creating new spaces for the public to enjoy. An estimated £20 billion in growth through creation of 100,000 jobs, 50,000 new homes and commercial space will be unlocked, according to Leeds City Council.
Feedback from previous consultations suggested that residents of connecting wards found walking and cycling through Eastern streets unpleasant. The area also suffers from a high number of road casualties and congestion.
